What this campaign is about

The 'Just Over' campaign is designed to highlight that driving even after just a few drinks is dangerous and the target of police enforcement.

You don't have to feel very drunk to be affected by alcohol. You might think you feel in control, but no one drives as well after drinking alcohol.

Drink Driving is still one of the main causes of road deaths in South Australia. Each year, over a third of drivers and riders killed in road crashes have a BAC over the legal limit of 0.05. The likelihood of a crash is double at .05 and four times at .08.

Some drivers told us that they would never drive when they were 'drunk' and showing the clear signs of intoxication, but believed driving when they only felt a bit 'buzzed' or 'tipsy' was a risk they would take. They think it isn't as dangerous and that they aren't likely to get caught. The 'just over' drivers often apply their own assessment to their level of impairment – and decide that they're okay to drive. This is despite the fact that they know they are very likely over the legal limit and are quite aware of the well publicised dangers of drink driving.

People who drive at BAC levels in excess of .15 are a grave danger to themselves and society, but people who drive at lower levels are on our roads in greater numbers. The truth is, these over the legal limit drivers are involved in just as many serious crashes as heavy drink drivers and the police catch them in greater numbers.

The fact that these drivers think it's acceptable and somehow of lesser concern means they will probably continue to keep taking these risks unless we all speak up.

MAC is targeting the 'just over' the limit people to make them aware that they don't have to feel drunk to be drink drivers and aren't somehow less guilty of a serious problem.

The police won't let you off the hook for only being 'just over'.
Your victims aren’t any less dead or injured if you were only 'just over'.
